Questions Answered

1) Who or what is TinTin?

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Tintin
"The Adventures of Tintin (French: Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic books created by Belgian artist Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi (1907–1983)."

"The hero of the series is the eponymous character, Tintin, a young Belgian reporter and traveller. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful dog Snowy (Milou in French). Later, popular additions to the cast included Captain Haddock and other colourful supporting characters."

2) What’s a "Test Bed"?

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testbed

"A testbed is a platform for experimentation for large development projects."

ie, I’m using this blog as a way to try out stuff that I may actually use in other places in a more intentional way.

I love wikipedia.  I’m not sure I could have answered either question without it.

So, what else did I forget to define?

WHY I moved

So, why would someone move their blog immediately after starting it?  I mean, I only had that other one up for a week or two.  And why would you move from something that’s as easy to use as blogger, to something you have to host yourself and be something of a geek to use?

Well, like I said in the transition post yesterday, I’m trying to learn Web 2.0, Social Bookmarking and Social Networking.  Specifically, I’m trying to learn these items as they relate to running a business on the Internet.  The only way I know of learning this stuff is by setting it all up and doing it.

So, so far, I’m using WordPress 2.3 with a few plug-ins that all the pros say I have to have:

  • Askimet - Prevents comment spam.
  • All in One SEO Pack - re-arranges titles and things so the search engines have a better idea of what each page is about.
  • Social Bookmarks - puts that block of images at the bottom to encourage people to book mark the post in their favorite social bookmarking site.
  • What Would Set Godin Do - Encourages you to subscribe to the blog the first three times you come.
  • Wordbook - allows the post I put up here to notify my Facebook account that  I have a new post, which then tells all my friends that I’ve posted something.

And of course, I’ve added some additional javascript that will allow me to

  • use Google Analytics to see how many visitors I’m getting and how they found my site
  • hyper link word to Amazon books
  • and put Google Adsense at the top of each post.

So, welcome to my test bed.

Thought Control

Interesting discussion this weekend concerning the new Tintin book that ISN’T being released because the Tintin series is not politically correct.  I had a conversation with Aimee earlier this month about the whole idea of limiting what one can say, and here is a perfect example.

By limiting what we say or what we read, we are limiting what we think.  The media knows this and uses it to our harm by only showing us what they think we should see.  To put it bluntly, the media participates in gossip and slander on a regular basis.  Gossip and slander sell.  Unfortunately, the truth doesn’t.

While I don’t agree with how the Tintin series portrays the races, it is unfortunate that this book has been pulled from the market simply because it stayed true to the original series’ portrayal of the races.  This is our historical past.  An ugly past, yes.  But our past.  And a past we need to be reminded of, re-introduced to, and discussed openly.

Here’s the dirty little secret behind censorship.  By making everything politically correct.  By eliminating books that portray what we really think, or what we really thought.  We make ourselves look better than we really are.  We deny that we are sinners and thereby deny that we need God.

But, there is something you can do.  Instead of reading a book that came out this year.  Read a book from the past.  You might find some thoughts you aren’t thinking and should among the dust and ugliness of those bygone years.
