On Reading Gen 17: 1 - 21

In our gathering of Christian believers, the men of the church read a passage of scripture and then lead the congregation in a prayer that is a reflection of the passage.  Yesterday was my turn.  The following is the prayer related to the passage above.

God, this morning we recognize that you are God Almighty. You do what pleases you and you do it for your own glory.

We see from this passage that sometimes you require us to wait a very long time before you send us any hope of fulfilling your promises. Sometimes we’ve waited so long that when you finally say, “it’s time” we really have a hard time believing you. We admit that sometimes we have a hard time believing you because we just don’t want to. Other times we have a hard time believing you because you’ve promised the impossible.

Lord, I guess we have a problem with belief. We confess that now to you. Empower us by your holy spirit to help us believe that you ARE God Almighty.

We also thank you this morning that you did fulfill your promise to Abraham and Sarah for it is through Isaac that you ultimately sent your Son Jesus to die for our sins if we would only admit we are your enemy and turn from our rebellion and trust you to pay for our rebellion.

I guess for most of us if we were honest, that’s hard to believe too. Help us in our unbelief and thank you for your promises.

Amen
