On Praying

My Pastor blogged about a post he saw on The Secret to a Better Prayer Life In his post he mentions that he thinks the ACTS method of prayer is helpful and Biblical. No big surprise there, he uses that form nearly every Sunday morning during the “Pastoral Prayer”

The thing that caught my eye from the main post though, was this comment:

I am convinced that one of the best things to help your prayer life is systematic theology.

Which I have found to be true in my own experience.  The more you know about who God is and what’s REALLY important to Him, the more informed your prayers.  You also have the added benefit of knowing that you are praying in line with His will and not just asking for approval on your will.

Which leads to the comment that Blake made about the other book to put on your list.

But first, a disclaimer.  I’m not much of a reader.  Because of the kind of work I do, I’m more of an “indexer” than a reader.  That is, I read enough to be able to find the information later on.  Which has made studying difficult.

But, I have done something between reading and indexing of the book A Call for Spiritual Reformation by D.A. Carson.  Old habits die hard.  Fortunately, I’ve been in a book study with a couple of guys who are much better readers than I am.

What this book has shown me is how much there is to pray for.  Despite the name, the book is about prayer.  I don’t know who titled the book, but the title is WAY off base.

This is not a “How to” book on prayer.  I would characterize it more as a revelation of prayer.  That is, the author reveals to the reader what prayer should look like by looking at the prayers of Paul recorded in his letters.  If you can catch the vision, it is sure to tranform the way you think about praying and give you plenty of ammunition for praying for not only the people you know and love but even people you barely know.
